What Makes a good Stock Trading platform & broker in THE USA?

Stocks are among the securities that are the easiest to trade in the US, and there is a plethora of stockbrokers and platforms that operate in the country. The market is also overseen by the SEC and the CFTC, meaning it’s one of the safest and best regulated in the world.

Unlike in the EU, UK, and even Australia where you can trade stock derivatives and CFDs, the American government only allows real stock trading with major stockbrokers.

Since the US stock market is huge and the number of brokers and platforms is steadily growing, it’s a big undertaking trying to find the best one.

As mentioned, we’ve spent countless hours reviewing all the brokers so you don’t have to.

Our reviewing process is very specific, and we follow strict guidelines based on what we know America stock traders expect from their stockbroker.

Naturally, when picking a top stockbroker in the US, there are certain things that you should consider.

For example, a US stock trading platform has to give you access to the main American stock market, i.e. all the companies listed on Nasdaq and the NYSE. But that’s the bare minimum.

Most traders also want access to the European and Asian markets since it means they get access to more stocks to trade as well as a longer trading window every day due to the different opening hours of the exchanges.

When trading stocks in the US, it’s all about variation and accessibility, and you shouldn’t settle for a limited selection of stocks.

You also want to pick a broker that offers trading and investment opportunities with limited commission because there is really no reason to pay excessive fees when trading.

Besides those main requirements, we also review and test the broker’s platforms, trading features, and account managers (when available), to ensure that we only recommend the very best of the best.

What Makes a Good Forex Trading Platform & Broker in the USA?

The forex market is the biggest market in the world, yet, trading stocks in the US is easier than trading forex.

The reason being that many of the world’s leading forex brokers also provide CFDs and therefore aren’t regulated for the American market.

That being said, there are a few really good forex brokers, platforms, and apps in the US, and we’ve tested them all. One of the top American forex brokers is based in the UK, but the other two have American roots.

Now, due to the differences in how a forex broker in the US operates compared to a stock, index or even cryptocurrency broker, we’ve reviewed them differently.

Obviously, we want the broker to be safe to use and regulated, meaning the broker needs to be approved by the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and they should also be registered with the National Futures Association (NFA).

We also look carefully at the broker’s selection of currencies and wouldn’t recommend a forex broker in the US unless they offered majors, minors, and at least a few exotic pairs. Since the brokers are based in the US, we want to see all the major USD currency pairs, but also a few of the top EUR, GBP, and JPY pairs.

After we’ve made sure the broker we’re testing is regulated and has a decent selection of currency pairs on offer, we continue to test the actual forex trading platform.

Our team does this by actually trading on the platform, trying different features and tools, making sure that the platform operates as we want it to and as we know you would want it to.

Lastly, we compare the broker’s fees and spread as well as make sure that they provide enough leverage for it to be worth using them.

No one wants to spend too much just to open positions, and without enough leverage, making a profit from forex trading in the US is difficult.

What Makes a Good Crypto Trading Platform & Broker in the usa?

There is a large selection of European online forex and CFD brokers that provide access to the cryptocurrency market. However, in the US, things look a bit different.

Once again, it’s stricter regulation that limits the market, making it impossible for online brokers to operate in the country. Although that doesn’t mean you can’t trade cryptocurrencies in the US, you just have to opt for using cryptocurrency exchanges, and there is nothing wrong with that.

When testing the top cryptocurrency exchanges in the US, the first thing we double-check is how the exchange is regulated. For example, for an exchange to offer fiat to cryptocurrency exchange in the US, they need to obtain a Money Transmitter License as well as clearance from the CFTC. And there are similar licenses for crypto to crypto exchanges.

To make things even more complicated, certain states have their own cryptocurrency trading laws that have to be respected. In New York, for example, there is a BitLicense issued by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYSDFS).

After we’re done assuring that the cryptocurrency exchange in the US that we’re reviewing is operating legally, we move on to the more hands-on testing.

At this point, we review the selection of assets offered. The days when it was acceptable to only provide access to the top ten assets, i.e. Bitcoin, Ethererum, Ripple, Litecoin, etc. are long gone.

In fact, the leading cryptocurrency brokers in the US all offer hundreds of assets in a range of pairs and formats.

Due to the cryptocurrency market’s high volatility, cryptocurrency trading platforms in the US have to be state of the art. The tools have to be extremely responsive, and you should be able to open and close positions with a click of a button without any delays. If not, you run the risk of losing money.

Lastly, when we’re happy with the rest of the review, we take a close look at the fees and charges of the exchanges and cryptocurrency platforms. The cheaper it is to trade, the better we grade them. It’s really as simple as that.

What makes a good futures Trading Platform & Broker in the usa?

In the United States, futures trading and stock trading are very similar, and the best stock brokers are typically the best futures brokers in the US as well.

As always, our reviewing process starts by making sure the futures brokers we’re reviewing are operating legally.

Before we can move on to test a futurestrading platform, we ensure that they are registered with the right agencies and that they have all the necessary licenses for their services.

The Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is the main government body that oversees futures trading in the U.S

With that out of the way, we move onto the selection of commodities offered.

Besides offering both futures and spot prices, there should be several instruments and markets available.

American futurestraders have a sweet spot for energy-based commodities such as crude oil, petrol, natural gas, etc. which is why we consider that a requirement for all of the brokers we recommend.

Moreover, there needs to be futures metals such as gold, silver, and platinum on offer.

However, in order to be considered one of the top futures trading platforms in the USA, traders need to be given access to other securities as well such as corn, soy, and cattle.

The last part of our test is spent trading on the actual platforms to make sure that they’re sufficient.

During this part, we want the platforms to run smoothly, and the extra features offered have to fill an actual purpose, making the trading experience easier.

Obviously, things such as account managers, market updates, tips, and educational material are considered to be great bonuses.

What Makes a Good Trading App in the USA?

There is a large number of great trading apps on the American market, and unlike in Europe where you have apps for all markets at once, most American trade apps are focused on one or two markets.

That makes it a bit harder to list the top three best trading apps, but we’ve still managed.

Some of the best apps are pure stock trading apps while others support stocks, commodities, ETFs, indices, etc. Then there are some that can be used for cryptocurrencies, and let’s not forget the forex trading apps.

To make the competition as fair as possible, we reviewed the apps and compared them with each other without looking too much at their specific selections.

Instead, we focused our tests of all the American trading apps on functionality and ability to keep up with the ever-changing markets.

Before we conducted our tests, we had to make sure the apps were safe to use. The best way to do so is by making sure that the broker or company behind the app is registered and licensed to offer their services.

In today’s world, any app that wants to be considered “the best” in its category has to be available on both Android and iOS, so any app that doesn’t support both operating systems was disqualified right away.

We also expect the apps to be updated regularly and to embrace new technology and features that help optimize the trading experience.

Also, during the last few years, mobile trading technology has literally exploded, meaning the best trading apps in the US are getting closer and closer to desktop platforms in terms of functionality.

As you can see, we require our trading apps to be of the highest caliber, and so should you. There are a plethora of trading apps out there, but only the three above-mentioned are good enough to be considered the top ones.

So don’t be afraid to be picky when choosing your next trading app, or you run the risk of limiting your ability to trade efficiently.

How We Did This Research

Our team of trading experts from America and elsewhere has spent countless hours researching and evaluating all of the leading brokers available in the U.S.

On average, we spend 150+ hours on each article but that number varies from case to case.

For example, due to the differences in US trading law compared to in Europe or the rules for online brokers in South Africa, we’ve spent more time on this particular guide to ensure that our data was, in fact, correct.

The research itself is conducted strict guidelines and protocols developed based on your many years working as traders.

Our goal is to make as fair of an assessment of each market in order to only offer the best brokers for American traders.

Since we typically recommend three brokers per market we also try and find brokers that provide different products or perhaps compliment each other. That way there is always something here for everyone.

The Legal Status of Trading in the USA

Trading is legal and readily available for American traders that are at least 18 years of age. Stockbrokers need special licenses which can be obtained from the associated regulatory body.

The security and futures markets in the US are mainly overseen be the Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Important to note is that many types of derivatives trading, including Contract for Difference (CFDs) is banned in the U.S. Therefore, a large part of Europe’s most beloved brokers aren’t available in the country.

That being said, other derivatives such as ETFs, indices, pptions, swaps, etc. are legal to trade.
